Perfect Fit

I purchased this top to replace the original one that ripped in the first year. This top was a perfect fit for my 10x12 Sears Bristol Collection Canopy. I immediatedly noticed the difference in the quality of this top. It was a thicker material and had more velcro fasteners on it. The top is very durable and can withstand heavy rains and winds.As a matter of fact during a wind storm of up to 45mph-50mph winds the top frame came off and bent and broke in several places.Much to my surprise the canopy top had one small tear in it wear one of the velcro strips had ripped off.The rest of the top is still in great shape if I decide to purchase another of the same type 10x12 Canopy from Sears..If your frame is still in good shapethen this top is great purchase for you..More detail ...

"Our" favorite feeder

My hummers had no trouble switching from the basic bottle feeders to this saucer and I love it because it's the oh-so-easy to clean. The built in ant moat dries out rather quickly but I basically fail to fill it anyway and haven't had any ant problems at all. I now have 2 of these feeders that hang from shepherds hooks and there's no leakage problems whatsoever. Remember: change your sugar water frequently; every few days to avoid spoilage. I highly recommend this feeder.



EDIT (04/2008): I wish this feeder came in 8oz since I don't really need 16oz and don't get that many hummers (unfortunately). But I did also purchase a Hummzinger Fancy (12 oz) and surprisingly I just didn't like it. It was easy to clean but was deeper than the PPO which didn't appeal to me. I had put the Perky Pet on one hook on the south side of the house and the HummZinger on the north side's hook. The HummZinger didn't get much activity which was surprising since the hummers are used to both hooks having a feeder. After 2 weeks I put the HummZinger away and went back to 2 PP's. Activity resumed on the north hook...



Considering both feeders are outside from April to November and rinsed in hot water for every cleaning they've held up well. No cracking minimal color fading no flowers have needed replacement to date.More detail ...

I have been obsessively planning a garden in the past few months. We have a huge yard and I cook constantly so it only makes sense to plan an organic herb and veggie garden. We went so far as to meet with several landscapers but found some listened than came back with a totally different drawing or some overcharged etc.



We had abandoned the garden idea and began planning a waterfall pond and certified wildlife habitat in the yard. I kid you not. We live on what is left of the Blackland Prarie and gourds yucca etc still grow from when the Indians were there. We decided to build on that history rather than change it.



So just as that got underway I figured there was no way to mix small creatures being welcomed into our yard and stream (which will occur by water shelter and landscaping with native plants especially with prarie grasses surrounding us)with also adding veggies for us that they would want to eat. Then I found this. Shazam.



I actually got it for about a hundred bucks less direct from their website since it's on sale there right now...I am not sure if that is temporary but you might compare prices as well. Amazon is cheaper 95% of the time but in this case they (the same exact seller) still had free shipping and no tax and a big discount if bought off their site...so since prices can change on both sites double check on that first prior to ordering since it's shipped from the same seller anyway.



Positives: Attractive cedar sealed with a water base

hinged front door to easily allow you in but that with the added height keeps the critters out.

The height also keeps weeds out.

It has an automatic watering system you can set to a timer. Monitor this if it rains for a spell though or you'll get overwatering. For us in sunny and hot Austin TX this was awesome though.

The tall part you see in the back is for climbers like tomatoes. You can't tell it from the photo but it has a screen on it. That makes them climb easy and easy for you to attatch em. No ugly stakes.

There are no rows that you need to plant between your veggies so you can plant more and have less weeds because this kind of kicks any weeds that may get in via soaring through the air out.

You don't have to bend down at all to garden. It's all built up in front of you. There is room in the little enclosed porch area for a chair if you want to sit and meditate with some flowers or simply sit and prune depending upon height of chair.

We have a sloped yard but because this is enclosed we just built up one side with limestone rather than having a sloped small bed It's easy to make it level. Enclosure also keeps out our dog who is tall and goes in the backyard.

All you need to do is fill it with good dirt...and plant some seeds or if you are like us do mostly veggies and some seeds.

Incidentally I learned that planting marigolds in front of the tomato vines ceeps even more bugs away. They don't like the smell.

Veggies love to be sprayed with seaweed spray once per week. The nutrients really made a difference...any gardening place should have this especially an organic gardening one.



We figure what we save in buying veggies pays for this pretty quickly. But we buy a ton of veggies so that's all relative! Organic veggies aren't cheap. But they do taste better in addition to being better for you. With this we KNOW how they were grown.



Negatives: Don't expect this to arrive on a big truck already put together. Set aside a few hours. It's in several pieces. I did it myself...but I could see someone buying this as a gift for a retired parent out of love since there is no bending in order to garden with this and...well lets just say there is quite a bit of assembly required and you might need to plan that too if they aren't nearby. If you want to know just how much you can download the manual from their website and see it step by step. I did read that first and this chick was undaunted and I did it so it's not that it's hard you should just know this going in that there is some brain power and time you need to plan for.



Delivery: I assume it is always shipped the same way but this was shipped because its so dang big via freight carrier. They called me 2 days before it was to arrive and asked me to pick whether I wanted it on Thursday or Friday. Then they said they could give me a time to be there for delivery or they could call me with either a 30 minute or 1 hour window to meet them at my house. So I had them call me an hour prior to it's arrival I left work met them and got it to the backyard and got back to work. Nice...I wondered how the heck they'd do that since it's not like you can leave it on a doorstep! They were EXTREMELY accomodating in getting it where I wanted it and at a convenient date and time.



Conclusion: Although this is still new for us it's lovely to know when "there isn't a thing to eat" in the fridge there's a whole bin of goodies in the backyard. Salad heaven. Broccoli casserole potatoes on the grill better health because we can throw fresh organic veggies on things we never thought of before like various pizzas stuffed peppers etc. I swear they taste better when you grow em and you eat more of em.

The Oasis is a FABulous Mailbox!

We ordered the Oasis Jr. mailbox because we intend to convert our mail service from a PO Box to residential within the next 6 months. We used PO Box service for security reasons.



Now for a one-time cost we have a spacious mailbox that is solidly constructed to receive our mail. The lock is solid although I am sure if someone really wanted to they could break in. I just think they would have to do it at night when nobody was looking because it would take a few minutes.



To give you an idea of the available space in this model of mailbox I was able to put a women's size 7 shoebox through the upper hopper-style door.



The door does not have a spring so when you pull it open all the way it will sit open. When you partially move it from the fully-open position it will close itself. If your mail delivery person seems incapable of shutting the mailbox doors like our delivery person you can rig the door with a spring that will keep it from being left in the fully open position.



We used the Oasis in ground black post with this box and it worked out great. If anyone tries to hit this thing with a ball bat OR their car I think the mailbox will win.



Overall this is a contemporary looking solidly made mailbox and we are very happy with it. I would recommend it to anyone that wishes to try and secure their residential mail and do so in style.More detail ...

Oasis mailbox post

This is an very beefy high quality post! The base has the holes pre-drilled and included are the 4 large bolts/nuts plus 8 washers to attach an Oasis mailbox. I used some of my own lock washers too for some extra insurance against them somehow working loose.



The post is hollow and square so I poured the concrete first then pushed it into the hole about 20" so that concrete would be forced up into it and put the mailbox at the right height when mounted. That worked very well and I did not have to brace it while the concrete set.



One minor negative was the packaging for shipment. While the flat plate at the top was protected in heavy cardboard and the post was inside a plastic bag there was no packing materiel in the box so the post came through it at both ends (without being damaged though).



A possible negative is the design of using bolts to attach post and mailbox which leaves either the bolt heads or nuts exposed (depending on which way you connect it). I am paranoid enough to wonder if someone could easily unbolt the mailbox and walk off with it. I found that with access to only one end the bolt would spin rather than unthread after the lock washer lost its grip. Good news but a prepared thief could handle that too if willing to make the effort.More detail ...

Great Device

I bought this device to keep 8 rather larges plants watered while I travel every month. I used two drippers per pot and left plenty of extra tubing between the plants. It worked great really great. I've had to use it 5x so far and each time it worked perfectly.



I've tried several things in the past including other drip system as well as the 3 different kinds of watering spikes. Not of them worked as well or as easily as the Oasis. Highly recommend this.More detail ...
